On June 23 we awarded our 2022 $100,000 grant to City Gate. We are thrilled to support their mission to engage and empower at-risk youth and families through their Gateway to Growth program.
Gateway to Growth is a literacy intervention program designed for elementary-school students in DC’s Ward 8 who are impacted by poverty. The program focuses on literacy as a cornerstone of future academic and career success, and a critical skill for combating barriers created by systemic racism. The program combines a high-impact literacy tutoring with a social-emotional learning program, including a caring approach and dinner for the participating children.
Impact100 DC funds will allow City Gate to expand the Gateway to Growth program to serve 110 students. The funds will allow City Gate to pay two tutors per site, recruit additional volunteer tutors, and acquire new teaching materials.
We are also excited to announce grants of $9,500 to our remaining four finalists: Edu-Futuro, Tenants and Workers United, the Urban Studio in partnership with the Audubon Naturalist Society, and GALA Hispanic Theatre.
Edu-Futuro’s mission is to empower immigrant and underserved youth through mentorship, education, leadership development, and parent engagement.
The Urban Studio’s mission is to advance design thinking for equitable and sustainable urbanism. The Audubon Naturalist Society’s mission is to inspire residents of the greater Washington, DC region to appreciate, understand, and protect their natural environment through outdoor experiences, education, and advocacy.
GALA Hispanic Theatre’s mission is to develop, produce, and present works that explore the breadth of Latino performing arts, making this work accessible to the broadest possible audience and using theater as a vehicle for social change.
Tenants and Workers United’s mission is to organize low-income communities of color, build power, and help people become change agents who transform systems, advance social justice, and improve the quality of life across Northern Virginia.
