Heller An Shapiro

Heller An Shapiro has worked in nonprofit management since 1984. She is an executive coach and strategic resource for nonprofit clients, advising CEOs and Board members. She is a Project Team Leader for Compass Pro Bono. She served as Executive Director of the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation for ten years and Executive Director of ArtStream for seven years. She served as an executive transition consultant with TransitionGuides (now Raffa Consulting) for eight years.

Heller An serves on the boards of Impact100 DC and the Alumni Association of Vassar College. She served on the boards of The Barrie School, Kidsave International, and the National Health Council, where she also chaired the Standards of Excellence committee. She chaired the National Summit on Trends in Volunteer Leadership Development and served as a member of the board of the Association for Volunteer Administration (AVA). She is a member of Leadership Montgomery CORE class of 2025 and Leadership America class of 1993.

Heller An managed volunteer programs at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and the Foundation Fighting Blindness. She advised affiliated arts organizations at VisArts.

She developed and conducted a three-year national volunteer leadership training program for the Foundation Fighting Blindness. While serving as Director of Volunteers at the Friends of the Kennedy Center, her program received a 1991 President’s Volunteer Action Award.

She presented workshops at national conferences, such as American Society of Association Executives m&t, Opera America, National Society of Fund Raising Executives, National Community Service and the International Conference on Volunteer Administration. She co-directed Executive Development Career Workshops for new executive directors and several Train-The-Trainer Institutes. She founded MVP Arts: Managers of Volunteer Programs in the Arts, a networking and education group. Heller An’s articles have been published in The Washington Post, The Journal of Volunteer Administration, AVA Update, ASAE Chapter Relations, Fund Raising Institute, and Leadership Guide. She is the author of the Christmas in April, USA Board Building Manual and a chapter in Managing Volunteer Diversity. She wrote the children’s book, Emily’s First Day.

Heller An has a BA from Vassar College and an MA from The American University.
