FEBRUARY NEWS

From Ann Vaughn, President

We are in the heart of our 2023 grant season. Reviewing grants from ambitious and effective nonprofits in the DMV area is at the core of what we do. As we go through this process for the third time as an organization, I'm struck by all of the ways that our community has evolved in our short but mighty history.

We have members who are bringing the experience of reviewing grants with us for the past two years. We have members who are brand new to the process, and bringing fresh expertise from their professional and personal lives.

But our community goes beyond our members. It includes our corporate sponsors, old and new, who are committed to supporting our mission and vision. It includes our previous grant recipients and finalists, who continue to share updates about their progress, and new opportunities for members to stay involved. It also includes all of our 2023 grant applicants, who put so much thought into their applications while also carrying out all of their high-impact operations. Our applicant pool is filled with organizations who go above and beyond every day on behalf of their constituents—providing the ultimate reminder of why we do what we do.

During this busy season, I want to thank everyone again for their hard work. Together, we are investing in this place we call home. Together, we are building a diverse community so that we can serve a diverse community.

Best,

Ann

2022 Grant Recipient Update: City Gate

In 2022, we awarded a $100,000 grant to City Gate, after a rigorous grant review process and vote by our membership. We're pleased to provide an update on their first quarter progress with our grant, based on our latest conversation with Dr. Lynn Bergfalk, President of City Gate. Dr. Bergfalk was able to provide some of the highlights of City Gate's expansion of their high impact tutoring programs for at-risk youth.

Successful nonprofits need to be able to pivot to accommodate circumstantial changes that inevitably occur, particularly in the aftermath of the pandemic. (We saw this with Access Youth as it faced challenges bringing its MADE program to schools it had initially identified.) City Gate has needed to relocate its tutoring program from Hendley Elementary School as was originally proposed. Instead, it has begun providing 1:1 tutoring for fifth grade students with serious grade level deficits at Payne Elementary School in SE during the school day, as well as before and after school hours, so those children can successfully transition to middle school. Dr. Bergfalk shared that they had recently received a three-year grant for 12 AmeriCorps members for high-impact tutoring at Payne and its other sites. Using the new Reading with Relevance curriculum we learned about in our site visit with City Gate, they expect to make great progress with these students.

Friends of Impact100 DC: Thank you, Banner Team!

Big thanks go out to all of the members of the Banner Team, the award-winning realtor group based in Bethesda, for a donation of $2,500. New Impact member Gail Gordon introduced Impact 100 DC to the women of the Banner team in conjunction with its Pay It Forward program.  The program, which has donated over $75,000 to local charities since 2017, is funded by a portion of every commission of the team members.  Each month the women of the Banner Team select a charity for its grant.  Our grant will fund Fellowship opportunities for new members who would otherwise be unable to join.
