SUMMER NEWS

From Ann Vaughn, President

Hello Impact100 DC members and friends!

I hope you all are enjoying these last few weeks of summer. It seems to me as if time both slows down and speeds up in August. Hazy, hot, languid stretches of time, all leading inexorably to Labor Day, which represents for so many of us a new year and a new beginning.

It has been a busy summer behind the scenes for Impact100 DC — a time of reflection and evaluation followed by a lot of nuts and bolts work. Immediately following our June celebration, the grants team worked to make revisions to our grant application to make it easier for both applicants and reviewers to manage. We have taken members' feedback into account with this work and other revisions to the process, so please keep those suggestions coming! Both our membership and communications teams will be meeting for extended periods of time later this month to finalize an exciting calendar of events to take us through next June, including a robust renewal and recruitment effort.

By the way, if you renew now you will make our membership team SO happy. Thanks to our beloved early birders who have already renewed!!! And welcome to all of the new members who have joined us during these summer months.

You can expect a rollout of information for the year just after Labor Day so be on the lookout.

Thanks once again to Communications Cochair Katy Gathright for putting together a terrific newsletter. You will want to be sure to read every word.

Best,

Ann

Congratulations again to our grantees!

Open City Advocates was this year's recipient of our $100,000 grant!

We're thrilled to support their work to provide mentoring and legal representation for children and youth in the D.C. juvenile justice system.

  • Watch this segment on NBC4 about Open City Advocates and their Impact100 DC grant!
  • Don't miss this profile from the American University Washington College of Law highlighting alumna and OCA co-founder Penelope Spain, OCA's mission-driven work, and their Impact100 DC grant.

Congratulations to the other three finalists, who received Impact grants of $20,666: Joseph's House, Communities in Schools of the Nation's Capital, and ArtStream.

  • Exciting news: Joseph's House was able to find a matching grant for our grant, bringing them closer to their goal of purchasing a new van. Having a safe, functional van is critical for transporting people back and forth to medical appointments and coordinating holistic care.

  2. We're already recruiting for our new membership cycle! It's not too early to renew your membership or start spreading the word to other women in the DMV who would help us expand our impact. New members can join here.
  • If you would like to host a recruitment event this fall, please reach out to Heather Johnson at [email protected].

This year's Arts and Culture Focus Area Committee gathered at Committee Chair and Board Member Mary Cohen's home for a summer get-together!

Thank you to Mary for hosting!

GALA Hispanic Theatre Co-Founder Passes Away

Hugo Medrano, the co-founder and Artistic Director of the GALA (Grupo de Aristas LatinoAmericanos) Hispanic Theatre passed away earlier this summer. Hugo Medrano founded GALA with his wife, Rebecca Medrano, in 1976. For 47 years, through GALA Theatre, the two of them promoted and shared Latino arts and culture through their productions. They have highlighted, preserved and showcased Hispanic heritage by featuring productions written by Latino playwrights and featuring Latino actors.

However, Hugo and Rebecca’s commitment to their heritage isn’t focused solely on staging productions for the wider community to enjoy. GALA Theatre also provides educational opportunities for the Latino youth in their community. GALA was a 2022 Impact100 DC finalist for their Paso Nuevo program. Paso Nuevo is a free, year-round program offered to students aged 14-19. It is a bilingual, inclusive program that incorporates all aspects of the theater—acting, playwriting and mentorship—and provides a safe space for the youth they serve.

GALA is truly a national center for Latino Performing Arts in DC and was the recipient of several Helen Hayes awards earlier. Though GALA’s staff and the wider DC theater community are mourning the passing of Hugo, his legacy will live on in the many actors, playwrights, artists, youth and audience members who have been touched by his energy, vision, and commitment to Hispanic culture. GALA Theatre is proud that their programming for this artistic season was selected by Hugo before his untimely passing. The schedule of events can be found here.

For more information about the life, contributions and accomplishments of Hugo Medrano, please see this article from the Washington Post.

Impact100 DC is proud to have met Hugo and his wife and to continue to support their efforts through the GALA Hispanic Theatre.

Caitlin Van Orden, Our New Grants Co-Chair

written by founding member Joan de Pontet

“When you need to get something done, ask a busy person,” is an Ann Vaughn mantra as many Impact100 DC women know. When Ann asked Caitlin Van Orden, a new member in 2021, to get involved in Impact’s leadership, Caitlin who had a “big job and a small child” said give me some time. This year with her son Caleb about to be 3 and having participated on the Family Grant Committee and being more acclimated to Impact100, Caitlin agreed to Co-Chair Grants with Sharon Dennis in 2024. She is excited to be involved and learn more about the amazing non-profits in her own city.

Caitlin’s consciousness of injustice and the struggle for human rights began very early. Her mother’s family were Holocaust survivors and the issues were formative in her childhood. The Darfur Genocide during her student days further mobilized her to be politically active and committed to advocacy through non-profits. After college, Caitlin was able to bring these two threads together as well as her personal interest in the plight of refugees working for USA for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. She had not planned a career in fundraising but found that major donor development was very satisfying on several levels: building meaningful relationships, helping donors who were passionate about critical human needs find an outlet for their philanthropy and vehicles to achieve change, working on varied aspects of giving from research and data to travel and interesting events, and quantifiable results. After earning her Masters in Non-Profit Communications at Johns Hopkins and working with several other non-profits, in 2019 Caitlin became the Senior Director of Major Gifts and Events for NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Caitlin was on a fundraising webinar when a presenter in Cleveland spoke about the donor circle Impact100. Caitlin googled it and discovered that a brand-new chapter had just been started in DC; she joined. She was pleased to find out that one of this year’s finalist’s Open City Advocates, is right in her neighborhood, the local involvement which is so important to her. Caitlin is looking forward to talking with members and hearing how they feel about Impact100 DC’s grant process and goals. She is a proponent of Trust-Based Philanthropy and interested in how we can do the most good with the least burden on the grantees.

When asked about leisure/free time activities, Caitlin left me breathless. Her hope is to “live out her childhood dreams” and she has already accomplished the first two, mastering pottery and doing stand-up comedy. Now, it’s voice lessons and singing……next……acting….. writing a novel……. becoming a veterinarian! We at Impact100 DC will look forward to Caitlin’s expertise and verve on grants.
